The American Cancer Society (ACS) and Extended Stay America (ESA) have partnered to provide free and reduced-rate hotel stays for patients with cancer who are receiving treatment away from home.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) and Extended Stay America (ESA) have partnered to provide free and reduced-rate hotel stays for patients with cancer who are receiving treatment away from home.
The reinvented Extended Stay America lodging program will launch in six test markets with a new, self-service platform for patients whose eligibility has been verified by the National Cancer Information Center (NCIC) team (Our 1-800 number/website live chat). Patients who live more than 40 miles from the treatment location and have a demonstrated need for lodging assistance in order to receive cancer treatment will be eligible for the program. Once NCIC has assessed patient eligibility, they will provide detailed instructions on how to book reservations for free or reduced-rate rooms. Patients will book their own free or reduced-rate lodging with Extended Stay America through a unique link provided by an NCIC representative. Patients must have access to the Internet and a credit card to complete the online reservation.
Our area will be part of the testing phase that will begin August 15. Patients with cancer who have a demonstrated lodging need for treatment-related travel can contact NCIC directly at 1-800-227-2345 to connect with the ESA lodging program. Health systems can call NCIC at 1-800-227-2345, submit a patient referral form via fax to 1-877-428-2862, or email SSBCREF@cancer.org to request lodging assistance on behalf of a patient.
