Yoga encourages one to relax, slow the breath and focus on the present. It can also lower breathing and heart rate, decrease blood pressure, lower cortisol levels, and increase blood flow to vital organs. A regular yoga practice can help one achieve tranquility of the mind and create a sense of well-being, feelings of relaxation, improved self-confidence. Yoga also helps to balance energy which is vital to the function of the immune system.

For more than 20 years, Natalie Gutierrez managed preventative health care projects for community-based programs in underserved communities throughout the Bay Area and California. Her work has spanned the spectrum of health care organizations including multi-county community health center groups, county public health department programs, and statewide HIV prevention projects. Natalie spent many years working with Indian Health Service-funded substance abuse programs and Kaiser Permanente’s health education. Natalie hold a BS in Health Sciences from San Francisco State University.

Complementary modes of health and wellness promotion has always been an interest to Natalie and she began incorporating those techniques into her life and into her work. She created stress reduction training modules incorporating meditation and mindfulness for community outreach workers who worked in communities of color who were addressing HIV, diabetes, and substance abuse prevention.  This interest eventually led her to become a certified yoga and meditation practitioner.

Through her training in therapeutic yoga, Natalie began working with individuals receiving cancer treatment. Natalie joined the Ridley Tree Cancer Center’s Wellness program in 2011, where she teaches meditation, yoga, and leads fitness walks.  Natalie lives in Santa Barbara with her husband, horses, and dog. She spends her time riding the hills of the Santa Ynez Valley and enjoying the ocean.
