Q & A with Fertility Expert, Daniel F. Rychlik, MD, FACOG and Silvana Kelly, BCRC Executive Director

Daniel F. Rychlik, MD, FACOG is not only a fertility expert but also, a longtime friend and supporter of the BCRC. Most recently he has been named a Founding Chairman of Men in Pink. In October for PINK WEEK 2021 Dr. Rychlik presented “Options in Fertility Preservation” as part of our education and awareness series. BCRC Executive Director, Silvana Kelly had a chance to ask Dr. Rychlik some questions about Breast Cancer, fertility and his relationship with the BCRC. Thank you to Dr. Rychlik for allowing us all to be inspired by his important work and generous heart.

Silvana: Why did you choose to focus on fertility?

Dr. Rychlik:
Helping couples achieve the dream of a growing family is one of the most fulfilling jobs in medicine. In a world that is dealing with a deadly virus, I am blessed to have a job that bestows people with happiness and a future family is hugely rewarding.

Silvana: What are some of the latest developments in fertility that you feel most hopeful about?

Dr. Rychlik: The ability to genetically test embryos has advanced the specialty of infertility in two significant ways. First — to assure parents of a  genetically normal baby. Second — to allow for highly successful single embryo transfers, avoiding the risk and complication of twin, triplet, and higher-order multiple pregnancies.

Silvana: What are some of the fertility issues that individuals might face following Breast Cancer Treatment?

Dr. Rychlik: Seeing a fertility specialist is an essential part of breast cancer treatment and can go a long way towards alleviating patients’ fears. Patient concerns surrounding breast cancer treatment are significant and include fears about the effect of cancer treatment on fertility, as well as worries about recurrence of disease should they become pregnant.

Silvana: What is the most valuable advice you could provide a woman or man facing infertility?

Dr. Rychlik: Dealing with infertility can be daunting and emotionally draining. It is important to build a relationship with a doctor that has the experience and expertise to optimize your chances, while also being honest and forthright, no matter the prognosis.

Silvana: Can you share with us an inspiring story of a patient who has been able to overcome fertility issues following cancer treatment?

Dr. Rychlik: I had a very young patient that was diagnosed with cancer by her future father-in-law. He was a doctor and had noticed something wrong with his son’s girlfriend. After her diagnosis on Thursday, I saw her and her boyfriend in my office on Friday at 6 pm. I was able to quickly secure her fertility for the future by freezing embryos. It was inspiring to me and to the staff when her boyfriend said he wanted to make embryos together, despite not being married yet, because the possibility for success with embryos versus eggs was greater. The patient said to me that she knew she had to survive her cancer because her future family was waiting for her in the freezer!

Silvana: Can you share with us your personal history with the BCRC?

Dr. Rychlik: I have supported the BCRC since moving to Santa Barbara 6 years ago. I have been amazed and inspired by their dedication and support to patients during cancer diagnosis and treatment. I have not only been honored by hosting the annual event of the BCRC as master of ceremonies but have recently been named a Founding Chairman of “Men in Pink’. I have given patient lectures informing them of their options during critical diagnoses, and I make myself available on an emergency basis to consult with recently diagnosed patients. I will continue to offer my services for this wonderful cause in any capacity that I can offer.

Silvana: Can you tell us about your current involvement with the BCRC as the Founding Chair of Men In Pink?

Dr. Rychlik: My new position with “Men in Pink” will allow BCRC to continue to evolve and stay relevant. Especially during these difficult times, the need to develop creative ways to raise funds and support the BCRC is paramount.

Silvana: During this past year many people have struggled with isolation and anxiety. What do you do to find personal happiness?

Dr. Rychlik: We have all tried to maintain some sanity throughout these years of isolation. I have turned to my family to show me what is most important. During the COVID-19 quarantine lockdown, my four children got creative and formed their own school called “Apocalypse Academy” along with a logo and a motto, “We will survive”. The best part is when my youngest daughter made us all have prom night. This was a wonderful event with homemade food, dancing, and decorations. This is when you realize that no matter what happens in the world, family remains the most important.

Silvana: Who are your heroes in real life and/or fiction?

Dr. Rychlik: My real heroes in my life are my kids and my wife. Throughout adversity and challenges, they always remain optimistic and supportive. My kids show me that life is most satisfying when we pull together. My wife is an OB/GYN who shows me that no matter what adversity brings us, the ability to help others is burned in her soul. Despite the dangers of the virus and the clumsiness and restraint of PPE, she has made sure that her patients are always given the utmost care.

Silvana: Is there anything you would like to tell us that most people don’t know about you?

Dr. Rychlik: Not only am I an infertility doctor but I am the president of the club. I have 4 children myself. I am also the commander of the Civil Air Patrol Squadron 131 and serve as a mission pilot during search and rescue missions. I have been an active pilot for over 25 years.
