From the While You Wait Website:
“Poems can comfort and connect us during stressful times, distracted us when we are anxious or bored, and help us to feel connected to our community.
Santa Barbara Poet Laureate Laure-Anne Bosselaar edited this collection of original poems from 80 poets across Santa Barbara County. We created this online version so you can read these poems safely, for free, at any time on your own phone or tablet. You will even find a few extra poems here. Read more about the While You Wait project here.
While You Wait is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Karoff Family Poetry Fund, the SB Poetry Fund, the Helen Foundation, the Simon and Diana Raab Foundation, Luci Janssen, and J. Alfred Roofrock.
Santa Barbara Poet Laureate Laure-Anne Bosselaar’s idea for the While You Wait project evolved to include 80 Santa Barbara Country writers, from young students to awarded poets, an unprecedented print run, a companion website, and posters in local medical offices and busses.”
Our generous friends at While You Wait have created a page especially for Breast Cancer Resource Center Clients. You can visit it at https://whileyouwait.org/bcrc/
Dancing with Angels
By Marilee Zdenek
Looking backward at ninety,
looking forward to heaven,
you’re getting ready to move
out of one life-zone
You speak of death like it’s the vacation you’ve been promised
but never taken,
like people you love are waiting there
and you’re holding up the party,
like God Himself is fitting you with dancing shoes,
feet that won’t hurt
and eyes that can see again.
Years ago, I remember,
‘Grandmother’ had too formal a sound,
so I gave you love-names
and made up songs
and stories in your honor.
I guess I still do.
